Research Interests

Our group investigates the function of keratin cytoskeletal proteins in epidermal differentiation and disease, employing cultured keratinocytes, genetically engineered mice and the fly as model systems. In particulary, we focus on the question how individual keratins regulate desmosome adhesion, mitochondrial function and cell mechanics in distinct ways. In addition, we exploit our understanding of basic cell biological methods to develop molecular rational therapies for keratin disorders such as epidermolysis bullosa simplex, which are characterized by formation of protein aggregates. In addition, we investigate potential roles of vimentin in human diseases, aiming to understand whether vimentin and keratins perform analogous or unique functions.
